Guntur: The district police have cracked the murder case of Palapati Satyanarayana at the Inspection Bunglow (IB), within 24 hours of the incident taking place. Mr. Satyanarayana, commonly known as Satyam, was shot dead by three masked men on Monday, in what is believed to be the fallout of a family enmity with the main accused, Mallela Satyanarayana, known as ‘Mandi’ Satyam, who owns a byre (mandi) at Chilakaluripet.
Top police sources told The Hindu that two key suspects were taken into custody on Tuesday and have reportedly confessed to the act. The police also seized weapons used in the murder. Police also took the main accused, Mallela Satyanarayana and his son Rajesh into custody. Senior officials of the department followed the trail of the accused and were able to catch hold of the driver of the red Scorpio, which was found abandoned on the National Highway near Chilakaluripet, in which the assailants fled away from the scene of the murder. Basing on key leads provided by the driver, the police arrested the two suspects.
According to the police, the main accused sent his emissaries to 113 Thallur village in Phirangipuram village, which was the native place of the deceased, on Sunday night to settle the dispute over registration of property in the name of his grand daughter. It was agreed that the two parties would meet on Monday.
Meanwhile, the accused hatched a conspiracy to eliminate Palapati Satyanarayana and roped in the assassins. But, Palapati Satyanarayana changed his plan and drove down to Guntur where he attended a luncheon function.
He literally walked into the death trap by revealing his whereabouts. A meeting was arranged at the IB and even as talks were going on, two gun men barged into the room and shot him dead.

In a shocking incident in the heart of Guntur city on Monday, a 60-year-old man Palapati Satyanarayana, husband of former ZPTC member of Phirangipuram, Venkayamma, was shot dead by three unidentified persons in the Inspection Bungalow, a few hundred yards from the Collector’s residence.
The murder took place due to a family dispute, according to Inspector General of Police K.R.M. Kishore Kumar who visited the spot along with Superintendent of Police D.S. Chauhan.
The victim Satyanarayana, his son’s father-in-law Mallela Satyanarayana and some others were holding talks to arrive at a compromise. Mallela Satyanarayana’s daughter Madhavi had committed suicide a few months ago and there was a dispute over who should look after their nine-month-old baby.
According to the police, three assailants barged into the room in ground floor where the two groups were trying to sort out their differences and another one waited outside.
One of the killers asked who Palapati Satyanarayana was and fired three rounds at him from a close range and fled in a waiting jeep. Satyanarayana collapsed in a pool of blood. The jeep was found abandoned on the outskirts of Chilakaluripet. All police stations in the district were placed on alert.
There were unconfirmed reports that two of the killers are from Bihar.
